Grazing Bentley
House Stables offers true all year turn out. Our own very
gently sloping grazing land extends to over 8 acres of mature mixed meadow
grass pasture. This is the perfect situation for horses as most of the
necessary herbs grass species and clovers are found here. None of our own
pasture uses the modern leafy hybrids developed for cattle or the italian
ryes intended for high yield cropping. One of the characteristics of the
Staffordshire Moorlands area is that a semi-impervious layer of clay lies
below the rich topsoil. This means that, even in the driest spells in the
hottest summers (picture above: August), our grass is always green and
tasty. Our paddocks are enclosed by proven equine friendly fencing -
natural stock-proof hedging, half-round wooden post and rail fence or
permanent electric fence. We use temporary electric fencing against
existing fences and hedges sometimes to prevent horses from challenging or
questioning paddock boundaries and to control grazing with precision – we
have found electric fencing to be very effective with our own horses. All paddocks have equine
water troughs supplied with fresh water from the mains.
